Columbia Snake River Campaign Applauds Washington State Investment in Energy and Recreation Studies for a Free-Flowing Lower Snake River

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 11, 2026

The Columbia Snake River Campaign is celebrating a significant milestone in the effort to restore the lower Snake River following Washington state’s approval of vital funding for studies to explore the energy and recreation potential of a restored, dam-free river corridor.

These studies, funded by the Washington Legislature and supported by the Governor’s office, represent a proactive step toward a resilient regional future. By identifying cleaner, smarter energy solutions to replace the power currently generated by the four lower Snake River dams and evaluating the business and recreational opportunities that a 140-mile free-flowing river would offer to communities and visitors alike, Washington is ensuring the Pacific Northwest will be prepared for a transition that supports both the economy and the environment.

This is a meaningful step forward for our region,” said Kayeloni Scott, Executive Director of the Columbia Snake River Campaign. “Thanks to Washington taking the initiative, we are moving past the ‘what if’ and actually considering the ‘how’ of restoring the lower Snake River. These studies will identify real, concrete solutions we can use to continue the services provided by the four dams while restoring healthy and abundant salmon populations and upholding treaty commitments to Tribes.”

The Columbia Snake River Campaign extends its deepest gratitude to the state leaders who championed this funding. Specifically, the campaign thanks Governor Bob Ferguson and his staff for their steadfast leadership, as well as Senator Sharon Shewmake, Senator June Robinson, and Representatives Beth Doglio, Joe Fitzgibbon, and Mia Gregerson for their dedication to evidence-based solutions and regional prosperity.

The campaign also thanks U.S. Senator Patty Murray and former Governor Inslee for setting the state on the path to solutions in their 2022 joint statement, highlighting the unacceptability of salmon extinction and calling for collaborative solutions that invest in the region’s infrastructure.
